Summer Sanity: Simple Systems for a Clutter-Free Home (with kids!)

Updated: May 29

Summer brings freedom, fun, and a whole lot more time at home - which also means more noise, more mess and more "I'm bored" declarations before it's even 10AM!

But, here's the good news! You don't have to choose between enjoying summer and maintaining your sanity. With a few minDset shifts and simple strategies, you can create a summer rhythm that keeps your home calm, kids engaged, and your days a little more peaceful 🙌🏻.

Here's how:

  1. Set the Tone with a Summer Rhythm (not a strict schedule!)

Kids thrive with some structure - yes, even in the summer! Try a flexible rhythm instead of an hour-by-hour itinerary. For example: think mornings for chores, afternoons for play and evenings for downtime. Consistency creates calm for both you and your kids!

  2. Let Kids Be Active Participants in the Home

This is a big one for me! Summer is the perfect time to lean into age-apprpriate chores. Involving your kids in the work of running a household teaches responsibility and builds confidence. It may not always be the easiest route - it might take longer, might get messy, and it definitely requires patience! But I've learned that it's one of the most valuable things we can teach them. Chores aren't always about clean spaces, they're about raising capable, confident and grounded little humans! When kids pitch in, they feel a sense of ownership and pride. They begin to understand that the home doesn't just run magically - it runs because we ALL work together!

  3. Create "Calm Zones" in Your Home

A cozy reading nook, a sensory bin, or even a space to unplug for 30 minutes - calm zones give everyone a way to reset and reset.

This doesn't need to require any type of full home makeover! Just a clear space with intention. A clutter-free area to decompress, journal, or simply breathe can work wonders when the energy gets high.

  4. Declutter Daily, Together

Instead of letting mess build up until it feels so overwhelming you can't breathe, build in small daily resets. A 15-minute tidy each day create a habit of maintenance. And another great opportunity to let kids be active participants in the home!

Here's the key to it: do it together! Put music on. Make it a race. Reward consistency. It's not about perfection - it's about creating a home that works for you and the season of life you're in.

  5. Simplify What You Can

Not everything has to be scheduled. Not every surface needs to be spotless. Heck, that's just unattainable! But, if you refrain your mindset and focus on simplifying your systems you'll be able to free up time and energy to actually enjoy the summertime.

Less chaos = more connection

A calm home doesn't mean a quite one. It means space that feels supportive, manageable, and aligned with your family's rhythm. By involving your kids, simplifying your surroundings, and setting realistic expectations, summer can feel joyful instead of just.....busy.

Let the messes come and go - but let the systems and mindset support you through ☀️

Cheers!

Jess
